Many school and youth groups signed up earlier this year to participate in the sale of the Berryessa Community Discount Card.

North Valley Community Association offered any school or youth group a substantial percentage of the proceeds from the sales of their community discount card for 2008. The card was put together by NVCA to provide a way for small businesses in Berryessa to advertise their services or goods and for schools to have an alternative fundraiser.

The schools sold the cards and kept at least 50 percent of the proceeds. Schools and districts that participated included North Valley Chinese School, Majestic Way Elementary School, North-wood Elementary School, Piedmont Hills High School's Interact Club as well as Berryessa Union School District and Orchard Union School District.

Piedmont Hills' Interact Club led the way in total sales, raising more than $1,500 worth of cards. The club was able to keep more than $900, or 60 percent, of the sales to fund other projects.

Shirley Duong, a Piedmont Hills student, jumped at the idea.

"I thought the card was a really good idea. I am so happy to show my support by helping to sell the card," she said.
